Provenance:
Well rusted and well used, these two ice pitons are a fine example of the ‘ homemade’ world of mountaineering in the 1950/60’s, a time when gear shops were few and far between and climbers went to work in the shed to create their own gear. Threaded ice screws didn’t appear until 1960/61 indicating that these two fellas pre date that. They are hammer in, hack out variety – hard work and time consuming – the super, fast screws of the future were still a dream away.
