THIS INSOLE MUST BE CLEANED PERIODICALLY BY WASHING IN WARM SOAPY WATER (BOILING WATER MUST NOT BE USED) SHAKE TO DRY – DO NOT WRING OUT. DO NOT DESTROY BY BURNING” , Label on base of Mukluks reads: “INSOLES FOR MUKLUKS WEAR FELT SIDE UPPERMOST TOWARDS THE FOOT. REMOVE FROM MUKLUKS AND GENTLY KNOCK OUT ANY FROST ACCUMULATED IN THE NETTING. ARRANGE TO DRY WHENEVER POSSIBLE. DO NOT BRING IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH SOURCE OF HEAT.” Tape on heel reads “SIZE 10 LANCASHIRE SOCK MFG.CO. 1951” with MOD crows foot logo.
The plastic insoles we have here in the collection were listed on their own when we first started our collection, so we thought they needed some company. The plastic ones were to go inside a pair of ‘boots ski march’ which were used by the Royal Marine Commandos training in North Norway in the 1980s. The chunkier ones were to go inside a pair of Mukluks, which were used by the Marines as well, though they were also used by members of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) to keep their toes warm down on ‘the ice’.
The lovely label on the Mukluk insoles tells us they were made by Lancashire Sock Manufacturing Company, with the military crows foot indicating they were made on a Ministry of Defence (MOD) contract.
More info on ‘boots ski march’ and Mukluks elsewhere in the collection.
