The Ladies Scottish Climbing Club (LSCC) was formed in 1908 by a lady called Jane Inglis Clark, along with her daughter Mabel, and Lucy Smith. Jane’s husband, William Inglis Clark, was secretary to the Scottish Mountaineering Club at the time, but they didn’t allow women, so the ladies went their own way. There was a Ladies Alpine Club based down in London at the time, though the Scot’s decided to go it alone, successfully!
A hundred and twenty plus years later, the Club is still going strong, having maintained a small, but very active, membership over the decades with three members, Monica Jackson, Evelyn McNical and Elizabeth Stark making the first all-women ascent of a 22,000ft peak, Gyalgen, in the Himalayas in 1955.
We’re pleased to have a, hand sewn, version of the LSCC badge here in the collection, along with six of their old journals.
Check out our ‘short johns’ elsewhere in the collection.
