CAMP stands for Construzione Articoli Montagna Premana, which translates – loosely – as the making of mountaineering articles in the area of Premana in Italy. It seems a blacksmith called Nicola Codega started the business way back in 1889 and several generations of the family have continued the business, creating one of the world’s leading mountain equipment manufacturers, making both equipment of their own brand and other items for different companies on some sort of licence.
A guy called Gary Storrick over in America tells us that the lettering on the CAMP logo “D CN & FD CAMP” stands for ‘Ditta Cogenda Nicola & Figli De Cogenda Antonio Metilde Premana’ which defeats both us and Google, but would seem to relate to Nicola Cogenda & sons/family.
Meanwhile, Gary Storrick has a mind-boggling website, Vertical Museum, which you may find interesting, or confusing!
Our wee hammer comes in a rather simpler form having once belonged to Mick Tighe’s mountain guiding company – Nevis Guides.
The name Lavaredo comes from an area of the Italian Tyrol and, specifically, the Tre Cima de Lavaredo, limestone towers well-hammered by pitons and piton hammers.
