Provenance:
The ‘bong’ rock piton takes its name from the noise it makes when hammered into a crack. We think it could be adapted a little to include an ‘i’ – boing, boing etc! Anyway, bongs were pretty much an American thing in the early days, developed for the wide cracks of the huge walls in Yosemite National Park, and other climbing areas of the USA. The first, and, we think, the only folk to make bongs in the UK were Danny Moorehouse and his partner, Shirley Smith, who had a company called Clogwyn (Clog) down in North Wales in the 1960s. They started making a variety of pitons back then, providing a UK product to counter those coming in from abroad.
