Provenance:
We have a couple of other CAMP Bernina ice axes in the collection, both dating from 1976. The one we have here is a later, 1979, version. The only differences we can see are the two slots cut in the pick and the adze, which can be seen in the CAMP display box above. Quite what they are for we’re not sure, maybe someone will let us know(?).

Based in the town of Premana, Italy, CAMP produce a large range of outdoor gear, they also make gear for other folk on licence. The Bernina axes were the last to be made with wooden shafts as the Ice Evolution of the 1960s/70s saw the birth of metal, glass fibre and composite shafts, which were stronger and more reliable, especially when used as anchors for belays.
