Provenance:
We had the smallest of these three pitons listed on his own in our earlier entry, so found him a couple of pals for company. We should perhaps say that we think pitons are ‘his’ and not ‘hers’ as they can be a little uncouth and rough around the edges! Ricardo Cassin was a famous Italian mountaineer, who, like many of his ilk, set up a company to make mountaineering equipment. Pitons were some of his earlier products when production began in a little town called Lecco in Italy back in 1947. We think the three we have here in the collection came along a little later, circa 1960. Doesn’t look like the two bigs ones have been used, but the wee one has seen a bit of action. All three were once part of Mick Tighe’s mountain guiding company, Nevis Guides.
