Provenance:
Paul and Sarah Howcroft created a wee storm in the world of mountain fashion back in the 1970s when they created Rohan, a range of functional, versatile, lightweight gear that looked good. The woolly breeches & anorak brigade fumed on their Woodbines having ‘never seen the like’, Gucci gear in the mountains was for the French & Italians, not the Brits. Fashion shows at trade fairs, innovative catalogues and creative marketing won the day and Rohan rose to stardom with an almost ‘cult’ following, one that continues to the present day, albeit under different management. The Backpacker smock we have here in the collection probably dates from the 1990s and incorporates the ‘Packpocket’ into which the whole smock can be stuffed and hooked on your belt or stashed in your backpack. Though made from Polyamide with ‘Dynamic Moisture Control’, we don’t think it controlled rain too well as it managed to work its way through. This particular Backpacker was once part of Jack Simpson’s wardrobe, his wife, Mary, kindly passed it on when Jack went for his last backpack.
