Paul and Sarah Howcroft took the mountaineering world by storm in 1972 by producing their stylish Rohan salopettes. The ‘old school’ were left itching in their woolly breeks and choking on their meerschaum pipes. British mountaineers were starting to look like continental alpinistes and young ladies swooned as they passed. The Howcrofts continued to produce innovative new clothing using modern designs and incorporating materials not seen before in the outdoor clothing industry and having identified a new market in the burgeoning travel industry they moved away from the mountaineering world to concentrate on that.
The Howcrofts split up and Paul unfortunately died in a car crash (1993) Not long after various companies bought out Rohan and it is still trading in 2025 under new management. These mint condition salopettes we have here were donated by Jim Buchanan, one time owner of another clothing company, Slioch. They are a pair of the very earliets design and very rare in this condition – thanks Jim.
