Although they did graduate to a small factory at some point, we think it’s fair to say that Slioch was a ‘cottage industry’, initially at least, and being based in Poolewe way up in the NW Highlands of Scotland, it was certainly remote.
A lady called Mary Buchanan began the Slioch enterprise, along with her husband Jim, back in 1982, taking its name from the mountain of the same name standing majestic at the other end of Loch Maree from their base in Poolewe.
Slioch produced a fine range of outdoor clothing, here’s what they had to say about themselves in the 1990s: “Our clothing is worn and trusted by Mountain Rescue Teams throughout the United Kingdom, and by professionals who work out of doors, from rangers and guides, to dog handlers and climbing instructors. Our garments are available in standard sizes, but most of our customers take advantage of our free made-to-measure service. If you find that off the peg garments do not fit you, we can almost always provide the solution.”
The garment we have here in the collection is a mint condition Fisherfield (info above) kindly donated by Tracy MacLachlan, who was a pal of Jim and Mary.
Slioch was sold to a couple called Tes & Catherine Urquart-Taylor circa 1998/9, they ran out of luck and money in 2006 and Slioch, the clothing company, was no more.
