Provenance:
This gets a little confusing as there are two Marius Eriksens, father and son. Marius Senior (1886-1950) was a gymnast who competed for Norway in the 1912 Summer Olympics, he was also a skier as he started producing wooden skis (either making them himself or having someone make them for him) back in the 1920s, we have excellent examples elsewhere in the collection.

Marius Senior had two sons, Marius Junior and Stein – the latter becoming one of Norway’s most decorated skiers, winning gold & silver medals in alpine skiing in the1952 Winter Olympics and three gold medals in the1954 World Championships, on both occasions wearing Streamlines skis developed by his father back in 1935 – Norway’s first alpine skis, using a blend of wood, plastic & material from the aircraft industry(?)

Stein’s skis may well have been similar to the ones we have here in the collection as they were bought by a lady called Evelyn Harrison while on a ski holiday in Norway in 1953, she skied around Norway a wee bitty and toted them up Cairngorm before the ski road was built, with several more adventures ensuing before she kindly passed them on to us along with her Apollo poles and boots (with a nice pair of ski pants listed separately).

Looks like they called the model of ski from this era the ‘Oslo’ which was classically made from Norwegian spruce and birch sandwiched between composite materials from the aircraft industry.

Fitted with Gresvigs Kandahar bindings and held with very fine ski clamps provided by Lillywhites of Norway we can safely say that we have a ‘classic’ set of skis, poles and boots – oops! Forgot excellent boots which we’ve listed separately – thanks Evelyn.
