Provenance:
If not the first, Stubai were one of the first to produce crampons with front points; the ‘Stubai-Form’ pair we have here in the collection date from the 1950’s. It would be another 20 or 30 years before adjustable crampons came along. Meanwhile, to get the front points the right width for your boots you needed to heat and bend them. Not sure where these came from – one of the many pairs that Mick Tighe collected in the early days. PS Oscar Eckenstein and Henry Grivel are credited with the creation of the first crampons with front points in 1929. Though as Eckenstein died in 1921 it would seem that Grivel was ‘forging’ one of Eckenstein’s ideas!
