Tulloch is little more than a few cottages clustered around a small railway station on the West Highland Line in the Scottish Highlands. It was here, way back around 1970, that Dave Challis started a wee cottage industry making clothing for the outdoors and calling his ‘outfit’ Tulloch Mountaincraft (TMC).
One of Dave’s early markets was for folk working in the North Sea on, what was then, exploratory oil drilling. The fleece and waterproof clothing also transferred easily across to the world of mountaineering.
The outdoor gear shop Nevisport began life about the same time, they were based in Fort William, just a few miles down the road from Tulloch, so no surprise they got Dave to make gear for them for sale in their shop.
We have a couple of other joint Tulloch Mountaincraft/Nevisport items in the collection, in this case it’s a 2-man survival shelter – the ‘in thing’ of the era. Folk had been carting sheets of polythene and orange poly bags around for emergencies, 2-man/person bags were an upgrade, allowing for a snuggle if you had a nice survivor along!
