Provenance:
Although liquid natural gas had been around for a while before, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that the engineers worked out how to get it into small cylinders without blowing themselves up. An explosion of a different kind followed with a variety of companies marketing camping gas stoves for the ever growing outdoor market. Just about every camper/ climber had a primus stove back then which ran on paraffin and was universally available throughout the UK; gas canisters were not. The few gear shops that existed at the time couldn’t stock the vast variety of different gas cartridges, and whilst gas was efficient and clean, it was also expensive. Consequently, many of the brands that appeared in the 1960/70’s quickly disappeared just like the Unigas Stove we have here in the collection. The French company, Bluet, with their Camping Gaz range finally captured the market and ruled supreme for a decade or so. In 2019 Unigas is a company that specialises in shipping liquid around the world and we assume it’s the same company that produced this wee stove around 1970, though we are not really sure. PS The present Unigas company(2019) don’t think they made this stove. We’ll keep looking.
